Benefits to Roofing Underlayment

Roofing underlayments are a crucial part of your roof, as it helps protect the roof deck and the interior of your home from water damage.

Synthetic and self-adhesive underlayment provides more benefits to a home than a felt underlayment. They are lightweight, durable, and they shield the home against the harsh weather elements.

Resisto underlayments are very lightweight and more comfortable to work with on the roof. These products have a greater amount of square footage per roll, which means it has wider coverage than asphalt felt products.

While being lightweight, these products are also very durable. Synthetic and self-adhesive underlayments are significantly stronger to resist moving or tearing. The material technology doesn’t allow moisture absorption and resists wrinkling and fungal growth, so the longevity of these products is more prominent than most other materials.

The harsh weather elements can also be a factor for the underlayment you require. Synthetic underlayments have a high-temperature tolerance, and they retain less heat. UV exposure has a longer timeframe, which can be beneficial if the roofing project has been delayed for any reason.

It's always helpful to know where each underlayment should be installed.

Self-adhesive underlayments shouldn't be installed on the entire roof, so it is recommended to place it in the areas where water could penetrate the roof deck.

Ice and water shield self-adhesive underlay only need to be installed in the below areas.

  • Eave edges (12" inside the exterior wall)
  • Rakes on gable roofs
  • All valleys and hips
  • Any penetrations - chimney, skylights, vent pipes, etc.

The remainder of the roof can be covered with a synthetic underlayment.

Self-Adhesive Underlayments:

Lastobond Pro HT-N is a "peel and stick" style of underlayment, and it can be used under sheet metal and asphalt roofing. It has a maximum of 90 days of exposure to UV rays.

LB1236 has a granulated surface and should ONLY be used under an asphalt roof and should be covered right away.

Note: Do not use a granulated surfaced underlayment underneath a metal roof because the two can rub together. Over time this will cause a corrosion effect.

Fastened Synthetic Underlayments:

Resistor is a nail down style of underlayment that can be used under sheet metal and asphalt roofing. It has a maximum of 90 days of exposure to UV rays.

Resistor Plus is a nail down style of underlayment that can be used under sheet metal and asphalt roofing. It has a maximum of 60 days of exposure to UV rays.
