Is It Time To Start Replacing Your Windows?

Do you know when you need to replace your window? Here are the signs you should be looking for.

It’s common for people to think that windows will last a lifetime, but without proper installation or upkeep throughout the year, they will deteriorate over time. Below are the most common signals that it is time to replace your windows.

1. Drafts

When you’re looking out your window, do you feel cold air coming from around the frame or seals? If it’s windy outside, do you hear the wind whistling through your window(s)? If you notice either, put up a piece of paper or tissue/paper towel up to the window frame or door to see if it moves. In the winter, drafts will be more noticeable as it could mean higher heating costs to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

2. Increase in heat and/or electricity

If your windows aren’t performing up to standards, you will begin to notice your heating and/or electricity costs begin to rise. Not only for heat, but it also increases the costs in the summer for air conditioning. If you compare costs from previous years and you notice a significant increase, this is most likely due to your windows performance.

3. Window hardware function and operation

Your windows should be operating without a fuss and should open and close without hassle. A lock system that works accurately acts as another seal and barrier against air escaping from your home. First check to see if your hardware needs some lubricant to see if that will help. If not, and you’re seeing other issues with your windows, it may be time to replace them.

4. Condensation

Is there condensation on the inside of your windows? If yes, this happens when the moist air from the inside of your home meets with the cold surface of a glass window. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but if your windows need to be replaced, it will happen often.

5. Single pane windows

Single pane windows are not soundproofed, feature no insulation benefits, and are energy efficient for your home. The lack of insulation of a single pane window also contributes to the increased heat and/or electricity costs.

6. Decaying frames

All windows can eventually rot and decay over their lifetimes. If your window creates condensation or it’s exposed to other moisture and dampness, it’s more likely to rot, and in some instances, mould could develop. This means it would be time to replace your windows.

7. Outside noises

If you have older windows, it’s more than likely you can hear everything and anything that is happening in your neighbourhood. Older windows, like single pane windows, don’t provide much insulation against sound - which is the reason why everything can be heard inside.

8. Moisture build-up between the window panes

Along with condensation, moisture can build-up on or between the window panes. This is because double-glazed windows have argon or krypton gas between the panes, and if the airtight seal between these panes is broken, you can get moisture build-up. The seal between the two panes is to reduce heat transfer, and if the seal is faulty, moisture builds up on the outside pane because it’s the coldest surface.
