When Is It Time To Re-Side Your Home?

Does the sight of your home when you pull into your driveway make you smile?

If it doesn't, that might mean that it's time to renovate the exterior of your home. Siding acts as another insulation barrier between your home and the harsh weather elements, but it's also an ornamental component that adds curb appeal.

If you're noticing some of the signs below, then it's time for a change before it affects the structure of your home.

Rotting

If you're noticing rotting in areas around the home, that means moisture has infiltrated behind the siding. In some areas, it might be more prominent as you see the siding rotting away, whereas in some sections the siding might be soft to the touch or it isn't able to stay and is falling off of the exterior.

If your siding has rotted, something to think about would be "what siding is best suitable for the climate I live in?"

Cracks, Gaps, and Holes

You've walked up to your front door and realized you see holes and cracks on your siding. If this is the case, you might have a critter problem you need to investigate.

When re-siding your home, it's always best to inspect the exterior wall to ensure no critters have gotten into your walls or attic.

Skyrocketing Bills

Are there no visible signs of damage to the exterior of your home? Are you looking at your hydro/energy bill and thinking, "huh"? There might be subtle areas in the home that are drafty where the air is escaping. Check areas such as walls or windows, or switches and electrical receptacles. Having additional insulation and new siding could make a huge difference to energy bills if your home is drafty.

You just don't like your home's exterior anymore? That means you need a change! The biggest trends we have been seeing are:

  1. Stone products on the bottom 4' of a home, siding (horizontal or board and batten), with a shake product in the gable areas.
  2. Bold, rich colours
  3. White corner posts to give a little bit of contrast to the siding colour
